Recent studies show that approximately 16 million people are using Facebook everyday. These stats make it the most used social platform in Australia followed closely by YouTube. So, it is essential for business owners to be active on Facebook to ensure you capture a fraction of these users.


Whilst Facebook appears to be a relatively simple tool for businesses to use, mastering it can be quite difficult. There are no tricks or shortcuts, it takes time, a sound understanding of who your target audience is and what they want to see from you.


If you’re on Facebook and feeling a little stuck, here are 8 things you can do to kick start engagement and start reaching your fans:



  1. Stick to the 80/20 Rule (80% Value / 20% Promotion). Facebook is a social platform and if you wouldn’t stand in front of someone each day and tell them what services or products you offer then you shouldn’t post about it on Facebook that frequently.


  1. Every post should have a picture or video. Text only posts are boring and people scroll past them. The only exception here is when you’re commenting or replying to a post. Remember you have a few seconds to make someone stop scrolling through his or her newsfeed and engage with your content.


  1. Use high quality photos and videos. Images and videos are going to capture people’s attention so the more compelling you can make your posts, the more likely you are to get engagement.


  1. Try Organic Targeting. This ensures your posts are seen by the people most likely to engage with them. When posting, you have the option to select who it is shown to based on the interests, gender, age, location and language of the people who like your page.


  1. Use Facebook Insights to see when your Fans are online. Posting at random times will hurt your chances of your post being shown to your fans. Go to the Post section within Facebook Insights and check out when your fans are online. If you find most fans are online at a competitive timeslot it could be more beneficial for you to post at off peak times so your chances of your post getting noticed are higher.


  1. Humanise your Brand. Facebook want you to create connections and relationships with your fans so giving them an insight into your brand, what goes on behind the scenes, staff profiles etc. are all ways you can humanise your business and get noticed on Facebook.


  1. Set your business page up properly. Fill in all the information you can about your business, including adding in your services and products. Most people will check out your Facebook page before they even get to your website so its important your information is relevant and updated.


  1. Do Live Videos. Live Video is a great way to capture your fans attention and interact with them in real time. These videos are more likely to show up higher in the newsfeed and record for at least 5 minutes (if possible).


At the end of the day it all comes down to giving your fans the content that encouraged them to like your page in the first place.
