How to Create Marketing Messages

What are your business’ marketing messages? They are more than the slogan or vision and mission. They are the key messages that influence and persuade your target audiences. They are what you want your target audience to hear or read. Therefore, they should “speak” to your audience, push the right buttons, and trigger a positive reaction.

Your Target Audience

I’m assuming at this stage, you’ve identified your target audience. If not, this should be the first and essential step. Having a clear idea of who your target audience will make it easier to create your key message to that specific market.

Positioning Statement

Your marketing message starts with a positioning statement. It is a short, declarative sentence that states the main benefit and addresses your target market’s number one pain point. In that short sentence, you should be able to capture your target market by letting them know how you can improve their life with that unique yet simple solution.

Key Messages and Proof Points

Develop three compelling key messages, and each of them should be backed by proof points. The proof points are the evidence that your solution works, how you are going to perform the solution, and results that support your claims. Mention previous customers that have benefited from your solution. Including real-life situations is powerful.

The Important Questions

To help you identify the marketing messages that describe your business accurately, these are the questions you need to ask yourself.

  • How is your business, product, or service different?
  • What problems does my target market experience? What are their pain points?
  • What solution does my product or service offer to these problems?

The Keywords

Brainstorm words associated with your brand. Identify the right keywords that best describe your solution, as well as the relevant keywords that will lead your business to the right audience.

Get to the Point

Take it easy on the vague words and jargon. Be direct to the point and easy to understand. Use simple words and express straightforwardly how your solution can solve your target’s pain points.

The Customer’s Viewpoint

Develop a clear marketing message by putting yourself in your customers’ shoes. This way, you can realise how you can effectively communicate with them on a personal level. Focus on the benefits and why yours is more convenient than the competitors.

What’s In It for Them

Instead of telling your target market what you do and bragging your credentials, they are more interested to know what’s in it for them. They will only start to care when they know that you care.

It Takes Time

Don’t worry if you’re taking time with coming up with your marketing messages. It’s just natural! Your marketing messages define your focus, so you need to spend a little bit of time on it. Once you’ve decided on your marketing messages, the next step is to test and refine them. Trial and error is part of the process.

Use the steps and tips above as a checklist in creating compelling marketing messages that will garner a response from your target audience.
