6 things to include in a Digital Strategy

The famous saying – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, couldn’t ring more true when it comes to why you should have a digital strategy.

The purpose of a Digital Strategy is to identify core areas within your businesses that can help achieve their desired perception in the marketplace and increase ROI.

Most businesses don’t have a digital strategy and go in blind when it comes to starting marketing.  It is impossible to accurately measure your success online without a clear reason as to why you are doing what your doing in the first place. A good Digital Strategy will define which customer touch points and channels need managing so the scope of your digital marketing is clear.

We have put together the 6 most important components to a Digital Strategy that you must consider when writing your own;

  1. Identify where you are positioned in the marketplace against your competitors.  Have you ever looked closely at what your competitors are doing? Write down your competitors and take note of what marketing they’re doing and how successful it is. For example, what social media they are on and do they get engagement, do they have an e-newsletter etc.

  2. Complete a SWOT Analysis. Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are and identifying opportunities and threats in the industry will help you see the areas you should be paying close attention to.

  3. Set Objectives. Ask yourself – where do you want to be and what do you want to achieve? You may want to increase your fans on Facebook to 2000, increase traffic to your website by 50% or get a certain number of enquiries online each month.

  4. Plan out how you will reach each objective. Detail the strategy initiatives you will take to achieve your objectives. Strategies including social media management, email marketing, blogging, search engine marketing, digital campaigns are a few you may consider.

  5. Who is doing what. You have set out a great plan for yourself but now its time to identify who in your organisation is doing what and when.

  6. Monitor & Control. What tools and resources are you using to measure and control your marketing to ensure your stay on track to meeting your objectives? Tools such as Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Crazy Egg are a few you can use to track your marketing’s effectiveness.

The most successful Digital Strategies are ones that are to the point, easy to read and follow and that are accessible so they can be read and reviewed ALL THE TIME!
