5 things we do for our business to get ready for the new year

One of the things with running a small business is that you never really get the chance to have any downtime. I always find it amusing when people ask me if I’m having time off during the festive season. Time off?? Well I did take Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but marketing especially social media is a twenty-four hour gig! I find the period between Christmas and New Year to be quite an exciting time of year for business, where I look forward to a fresh slate and new opportunities that await in the new year.

Here are the 5 things we do for our business:

Re-evaluate our Strategy

As still being a relatively new business, 2016 has seen us shift our focus a little at Gloss. This is pretty common with start-ups and new businesses as we all try and find out feet and organically grow, which can mean the introduction of new products and services or ditching those that don’t work.

Parts of our strategy we had set in 2016 are no longer relevant to us in 2017 so it’s the perfect time to re-evaluate and redo it!

Plan our Marketing for the next 12 months

This goes hand in hand with our strategy. We work out what marketing we are going to undertake as part of our strategy and the plan our calendar out for the next 12 months. Yes that’s right a whopping 12 months!! We of course can change this during the course of the year, but we know when we need to start promoting our events, workshops and launch campaigns, when our newsletter has to be sent etc.

What do they say “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail!”

Reset our Goals for 2017

Some goals we reached in 2016 and some we still need to work on! A lot has changed over the past year and some goals aren’t so relevant to us anymore.

We redo our financial goals, what monthly income we want to achieve and profit etc, brand awareness goals, how many subscribers we want, the list goes on. This helps us to tie in with our strategy on how we are going to achieve these goals.

We always make sure they are realistic, there is nothing worse than that crushing feeling of not achieving what you have set out to do because the goal posts you set were too far away.

Refresh our Branding

Who doesn’t love a good haircut, that fresh feeling it gives you. And it’s the same for our branding. We don’t do anything too drastic but we refresh the style for our images, tweak our copy and messaging and set the branding for all our campaigns and workshops.

As we evolve so does our branding. Look out for our new website launching late January 2017.

Go through our email subscriptions

I must admit I click “delete” on a lot of emails I get from mailing lists I’ve signed up to. It’s a great time for both Kat and I to cleanse these. It’s simply some of them don’t interest me anymore or they send way too many or I don’t even know why I signed up to them in the first place!

The downtime during the festive season is the perfect time to get ready for 2017, before everyone is back into the swing of things.
